ASU Grad Phil Mickelson Wins The Open Championship
In perhaps one of his most memorable rounds of golf ever and certainly his best final round in a major championship, ASU alumni Phil Mickelson won The Open Championship at Scotland’s Muirfield.
With a dominating Sunday round 66 (-5), Phil moved from 5 shots back at the beginning of the day to win by 3 shots over Henrik Stenson of Sweden, and a 4-shot win over Lee Westwood, the leader going into Sunday’s final round, Ian Poulter and Adam Scott.
Playing conditions at Muirfield made this one of the harder Open Championship venues in recent years, and when the tournament ended Sunday evening in the cool, stiff Scottish winds, Phil was the only golfer who finished under par at -3 (281).
With his playoff win the previous week in the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart in Inverness, and after taking home the Claret Jug in The Open Championship, Phil Mickelson proved himself the king of Scottish golf in 2013.
All of us at ASU Karsten are proud of Phil’s remarkable achievement, and we send along our congratulations and best wishes to him for his convincing victory at The 2013 Open Championship.
