With Ties to ASU Spain Wins the International Crown
While it’s always disappointing when the U.S. doesn’t bring home the trophy in International competition, we have to admit that we were cheering on the Spanish Team during the recent International Crown championship held at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD. Two members of the Spanish team have extremely fond memories of another victory in which they participated at the same golf course in 2009.
This year’s International Crown winning Spanish Team included Beatriz Recari, Belen Motho, Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Munoz. Carlota and Azahara were stand-out stars during their time on the Women’s team at Arizona State. In fact, in 2008 in New Mexico, Azahara became the NCAA Individual Champion. And, in 2009 and 2010, Carlota was the (then) Pac-10 Individual Champion.
But, in 2009 at the very same Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland, Azahara, Carlota and the rest of the high performing ASU team took the women’s NCAA Team Title with an 8-stroke win over UCLA. Both Carlota and Azahara have gone on to terrific professional careers playing golf around the world. We were fortunate to have them at ASU Karsten during their time on campus, and we continue to wish them nothing but outstanding success in their respective professional careers.
