ASU Karsten changes to Par 70

01/21/2008

ASU KARSTEN ANNOUNCES GOLF COURSE CHANGES

The ASU Karsten Golf Course announced today that they are changing par for the 18-year-old course. Since opening in 1989 the course has played to a par of 72 -- effective immediately, the course will play to a par 70.

Two holes will change – the 500-yard 5th hole, traditionally played as a par 5, will now play as a 493-yard par 4 and the 10th hole, formerly played as a 546-yard par 5, will now play as a 498-yard par 4. Par by definition refers to a number assigned to an individual hole and to the full collection of holes on a course that represents the expected number of strokes it should take to play each hole. The value assigned to represent par is always comprised of two putts and the number of strokes it should take to reach the green.

“With advancements in technology, coupled with the strength and athleticism seen by many young athletes, we felt as though the change was necessary,” said ASU Karsten Director of Golf Daryl Crawford. “With the numerous collegiate tournaments and various other events that we host, a par 70 will provide a better challenge for the top players.”

Numerous courses throughout the country also play to a par-70. In fact, many of the USGA’s events are held at par 70 courses throughout the country.

The ASU Karsten Golf Course is a 7,002-yard, par-70 classic Pete Dye design reminiscent of a Scottish links course. Since opening in 1989, ASU Karsten has attracted the attention of prominent NCAA golf events and coveted tournaments such as the Phoenix Thunderbirds and PING Invitational. Managed by Lyon Golf, the ASU Karsten Golf Course is also home to the Arizona State University men’s and women’s NCAA golf teams, both multiple national championship winners.
